A motorized de-coiler is actively driven by an electric or hydraulic motor, designed to match the feed rate of downstream machines (such as roll formers or high-speed presses) without exerting tensile pull on delicate or thin strips. A pull-off or drag uncoiler relies on downstream pinch rolls or levelers to draw the strip forward, with the uncoiler only providing variable back-tension braking. For materials under 0.6mm or heavy coils over 15 tons, motorized uncoilers with loop sensor control are strongly recommended to prevent strip stretching or slippage.

Single-mandrel cantilevered decoilers are ideal for coil weights up to 15-20 metric tons and widths up to 1800mm, offering fast side loading and straightforward mandrel expansion. For extra-heavy master coils (20 to 35+ tons) or strip widths exceeding 2000mm, a double-cone or double-stub mandrel configuration provides symmetrical outboard support from both sides, eliminating shaft deflection and guaranteeing stable uncoiling under massive mechanical loads.

Surface integrity is preserved through several specialized design elements: vulcanized high-grade polyurethane or nylon pads mounted directly to the expanding mandrel segments, rubberized snubber and peeler rolls, synchronized non-contact ultrasonic or optical loop control to eliminate friction scuffing, and dedicated paper rewinder units that strip protective interleaving paper cleanly without wrinkling.
